I've just bought 2 new ipad pros, one for myself and one for my boyfriend, its a surprise for his birthday at the end of next week.

He has an iPhone I have an android but used to have an iPhone until about 4 years ago, I will be returning to the iPhone when the iPhone 12 Pro Max is released.

I'd like to set my iPad up in advance of next week but don't want to risk somehow spoiling the surprise if by logging into my new ipad and it alerts his iPhone that I'm now back on an Apple device.

Thinking possibly iMessage remembering my apple ID or something?

So if I start using my iPad will he know or his iPhone know? Will he suddenly start seeing blue bubbles instead of green ones!?
If yes then I'll just have to wait until next week as I don't want to ruin the surprise and have to have the patience to hang on a few days!! lol

Thanks in advance

Until you switch to an iPhone, any messages sent to your phone number will still be green bubbles.

He will be able to send iMessages to your AppleID email, though.

Thanks for answering, so if I sign into the iPad with my apple ID this is enough for iMessage to suddenly recognise me even if I never open iMessage between now and next week?

As long as you don’t send an iMessage to him from your iPad, he won’t know.

Only if he sends an iMessage using your email address. If he just uses your phone number for iMessage, then nope he wouldn't know. Those will remain green bubbles.

Now, once you do get that iPhone up and running...

Go into the iPhone settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding. That feature will allow you to receive/send SMS messages on the iPad.
