I purchased the movie “The Secret of Kells” from the Apple TV store in March. Rather than manually searching for movies in my library, I usually search for them or use Siri. Instead of a play button, it’s now giving me the option to purchase it. When I manually navigate to it in my library, I can play it. My assumption was that whenever Apple updated a movie (adding HD, for example), it wouldn’t have to be re-purchased. Any idea what might be going on here?

Is the version you purchased SD? If the version you landed on using Siri defaults to the HD version, it will show a Purchase button. Just tap on the SD button and it should show Play.

The copy in my library is HD. My copy also displays 1 hr 15 mins while the current movie page displays 1 hr 18 mins...

Out of Apples hands unfortunately as the studio has relisted the movie under a different store ID.
Sometimes this may happen because there’s been a change of distribution ownership.
A Siri search checks the store and matches those IDs to your purchase history, if your purchase IDs don’t match the store then they won’t show.

Also if you had a movie in SD which had the HD added then you would need to repurchase to get the HD rights to that movie as there are no SD to HD upgrades, only HD to 4K.

Official word from Apple:

I’ve carefully checked my resources, and have found that the version of this movie which you purchased has been replaced with another version on the iTunes Store.

Since Siri search pulls up results for the current iTunes Store listing, this is why it only shows a purchase option when you look up the movie that way.

The version which you purchased is still available to stream and download from your library, but can no longer be bought from the iTunes Store.
