I don’t know how installing iPadOS 17 and data is gone.
You go iTunes Store check purchased ringtones.

it is impossible to lose data by simply installing iPadOS 17 unless bugs or you reset before installing.

Ok since my heart is already aching and paining to see all my data gone without my consent, I will share the entire story with you. It’s going to be a long one. So please bear with me.

so I normally update my iPad Pro which is a 2018 11" I update it via iTunes on my Windows computer the Windows machine that I use is a very old one running Windows 7, so now when I try to update any of the Apple device via iTunes, the first prompt it gives me is please update your iTunes to latest version but when I try to update it, it gives me a prompt that it is already an updated version so I guess what the problem is with Windows 7 the current iTunes version could be only updated to the Version I currently have so I cannot upgrade the iTunes any further.

So when I faced this problem, I decided to use a third-party software to update to iPad iOS 17 so the other day I updated my iPadOS 17 and while in the process I think it did give me a prompt would you want to save your data now like you rightly said my experience when using iTunes in the past is, even if you do not select save data, whatever you have does not 100% mean that is going to get lost, it may or may not happen so I have been saved without even saving data while iPadOS update in my past attempts of updating the iPadOS.

So I did the same thing but unfortunately when the entire software got installed, my data was lost when I say my data was lost, I mean Whatever data other than which was saved to iCloud in the 2GB free space that I have got it, but other than that the data which was saved on my device has all gone.

So now tell me is there any way to get the data back or is it completely gone, one thing to note here this third-party software was also giving me some problems while updating it gave me some errors which I eventually overcome. So now there is various possibilities on what could have happened, Either the installation did not go very clean or I don’t know? but the fact of the matter is as of now I have lost all my data which was not saved in the iCloud library, What can you tell me about it?

Did you backup your iPad, either locally or to iCloud?

But it is not 100% a given that if you do not back up your data it will be gone for sure. I have had instances where I did not back up my data and even then when I updated the OS the data was still there.

why were you using third party software to update it as opposed to just updating directly on the ipad?
