Hello,

Is it normal for new content purchased on an AppleTV (1st generation) to delete automatically from the AppleTV after being synced with the iTunes library on a Mac?

It is very annoying because the syncing process takes a long time and I have to transfer any new purchases back to the AppleTV ALL OVER AGAIN.

I hope I'm doing something wrong.

Can anybody help?

Regards.

Yes, that's how it works...you choose what you want synced onto your ATV...

...one of the many reasons I only stream on my first gen ATV...never synced anything.

To get what you want, you will probably have to go to the Movies (or TV Shows) tab in iTunes and click on "Automatically Include"...and then choose what? ...5 most recent? 10 most recent? 5 most recent unwatched? It's up to you.

Any of those 'most recent' choices will let you see the most recent purchases.

If you unclick all of your sync choices, you will have full access to your entire library...purchased movies will automatically sync back to your computer...the only caveat is you need you main iTunes computer available anytime you are watching ATV.

Thanks for responding, but I didn't explain the problem clearly.

When I sync something from my Mac to my AppleTV it "copies" the item to the AppleTV, but the item also still remains on the Mac.

The problem is when I try it the other way around. If the item is purchased on the AppleTV (and thus there is no "copy" on the Mac), then when I sync the item is moved (not copied) to the Mac. Then I have to tick the box in iTunes and sit through another lengthy sync to put it back on the AppleTV.

Once this is done, then future syncs with the item are normal.

NO, you explained the problem well enough, that's how I understood it. :)

Look at it this way: iTunes on your computer is the sole commander to tell the ATV what to store on it...if you buy a new movie on the ATV, it's copied (moved) back to the Mac and erased on the ATV, BUT iTunes on the Mac has no instruction telling the ATV to host this movie. It's still going by your old instructions which have no idea this movie exists.

You can get around this by asking it to sync the "X most recent" items in those tabs as I stated. This will make sure that the last 5/10 movies/shows you purchased...however you bought them (ATV, iTunes, iPhone...etc)...will show up when you sync your ATV.

I never have this problem, since I never sync and only stream from my ATV, version 1.
