purchasing an existing domain

I'm in the process of setting up a very small home business for a current side project. As I don't expect to make a lot (or any) money on the business I am operating from very limited resources.

The domain that best suits my needs is already taken. But it's currently being used as a generic links site for lots of random websites. I'm assuming this means that the domain is up for sale.

I've been reading that there are companies that can negotiate sales of domain names. Can anyone recommend a good company with reasonable/inexpensive rates?

Sometimes those sites with links like that are not for sale, just the owner hasn't done anything with the domain yet. Since your business is so small it might just be worth it for you to go to godaddy.com and pick a fresh domain. Even the domain you want you can add something to it that is still available.

Just get a new domain, buying an existing domain can get very expensive,
i found a neat site for finding domain names pcnames.com
it makes it pretty easy/fast to find a open domain name

Well, it depends on the name. Some people have domains just sitting around that aren't worth more then the registration they paid. I would at least contact them via their WHO is and make a reasonable offer. Hard to say without knowing the domain.

I looked them up on whois.com and they are registered to Whois Privacy Protection Service, Inc.

I assume that means there's no way of finding out who contact about buying the domain?
