Purchasing dilema ... all because of the screen

Dear fellow forum users,
I could do with some advice as I have gotten overwhelmed by too much info.

My beloved imac 24" (white) is finally on its last breath and I need to replace it.
However since all the latest iMac's come with silly glossy screens, this is not an option for me as it effects my eyesight to much.

So I was all ready to commit to a Mac Pro today, along with a old apple 30" ACD. However due to all the conflicts in getting it to work I have had to reevaluate the situation.

Basically I would like a non glossy 30" screen, 16:10 and with either a hdmi (can it support this res?) or a mini display port. Do the latest Mac pro's allow the use of Apple 30" ACD screens without an adaptor needed?

What screen do you guys use with your mac pro?

You can use the 30" ACD with it, as it has a standard dual-link DVI port, no adapter needed.

i don't believe any of the official apple video cards come with hdmi, but they all come with dual link dvi which will work perfectly for the 30 ACD without an adapter.

check out the dell 30". I know the 27" use the exact same panel as the ACD 27 and the imac 27, so the quality would be very similar. Its matte and also comes with all sorts of ports and connections.

Is there some reason you want a monitor with Mini Display Port? I have two monitors on my Mac Pro. One is the 30" ACD, hooked directly to the DVI port, and the other is a 22" Dell, hooked to the Mini Display Port via an adapter.

Despite all this, I don't understand why the use of an adapter would alter the purchase to begin with.

Yes the current Mac Pro with ATI 5770 or 5870 has one dual-link DVI port. The 30" ACD has a dual-link DVI port and proper dual-link DVI cable.

You are good to go with no adapters, at the full resolution.

Alternatively, if what you really want is an iMac with matte screen, you can put a matte protective film on your screen for about $45-$65.

My HP laptop has a glossy screen, which really was terrible, especially outdoors. The matte film solved this problem perfectly and provided protection as well.

I think any of Dell's 30 inch monitors would be good... They are all matte (AFAIR) and they have good panels too. 3007WFPHC or the 3008 one.. or the U3011. The recent ones should all have hdmi ports.. and Dual link DVI and display ports. I use a NEC 3090 (for photography purposes) which is also matte with my Mac Pro. Most default cards that come with the Mac Pro (2009, 2010 machines and earlier too) have dual link DVI ports so you won't have any problem connecting these monitors.

What are you using it for?

I need accurate colour and like the NEC LCD's I have a 2690 and a 3090 Spectraview.

If all you need is an everyday monitor then the Dells are a good mix of quality and price.

The 30" ACD works right out of the box with the Mac Pro (Although I got mine with a 27" ACD, I have had a 30" hooked up to an identical model and it worked with no adapters on the built in Dual Link-DVI). The only people whove been having issues are those attempting to get 3 screens to work (Generally 3 * 30").

take the NEC PA series into consideration... they easily surpass the cinema displays in price, quality and interface.
