can anyone offer any input on why you CAN'T purchase HD movies on atv (only rent) I would much rather start an HD collection than trying to rip my DVD collection and have to settle for subpar quality anyway.

I can see if atv is contractualy barred from selling HD by studios but at it's best atv HD is even with cable tv HD channels.

Any ideas?

I'm guessing here... probably file size. I hate this too I would gladly buy the movies at a higher cost. I have more than 4TB of storage space let me use it the way I want.

It also annoys me that I can't import my DVD's with iTunes. Kinda lame imo.

yea (studios) i think so too. Why would they want another retail HD source competing with their precious Blu-ray.

And as far as ripping or copying Dvd's for use with atv, my take is, for recreational purposes, such as travel or leisure etc. it's not an issue for me, but for the serious film buff or collector or some one in the industry, that really digs the atv concept, it's just a BIG MISS quality wise.

NO matter what handbrake version you have. You just cannot achieve the quality of an actual DVD or even HD cable tv.

I don't know about cable HD, but Handbrake's ability to transcode Blu-Ray discs to 720p is far better than satellite HDTV (at least on my Samsung 720p television).

I may be taking my comment back as I'm in the process, for the first time, of giving handbrake a shot, I had wasted money on similar programs to no avail.

However I have a 1080i Philips plasma and nothing comes close. But I will try it.

I wish the studios would give you the ability to download the HD movie if you buy a Blu-Ray disc. They started doing this with Family Guy DVD, you buy the DVD and get a free digital copy. Although, the quality is not DVD as it is the same thing you can buy directly from iTunes today.

This needs to change and I bet sales would go way up.

Buy DVD --> Get DVD Quality Digital Copy with all audio tracks, etc
Buy Blu-Ray --> Get HD Quality Digital Copy with all audio tracks, etc

Um, first you said this:

... which sort of implies you have actually used HB. But, then you said this:

I had never tried HB, and I did put it down before I actually did, but I have now and maybe it's my hardware but between having to decrypt the DVD's and then passing them twice on HB; the results in my case were not worth the time and energy. Maybe other more experienced users can master the art of ripping better than me but I say the movie buff, not really the Mac or PC savvy, would rather pay for HD straight from iTunes on atv.
