Hello,
I'd like to JB my new 3GS but I don't know if I shall wait that the dev team releases it or use the JB from geohot.

Beside the Windows only version and the usability (UI ..), what can be different between the geohot's version and the one from the dev team ?

Do they use the same exploit ?

Dev team usually modifies firmware packages from Apple, then you restore the custom firmware to your phone. Geohot jailbreaks without this. Unless the newer dev team workings do this, that would be the difference.

Yeah cuz wikipedia isn't biased at all.

Any and all drama between a bunch of hackers shouldn't sway anyones position. These tools are all hacks and betas. They were never designed to work on every iPhone example nor is there any warranty or support implied. Either method you chose does not offer any sort of "security" over the other. The only thing you can do is educate yourself, read up on the forums and try your luck.

That being said, my jb'ed 3GS using geohot's method is working great. Just don't try to customize with winterboard.
 
well I've just JB it ... by mistake :)

I saw that the mac version was released, I downoaded an run it. Some mins after I pluged my iPhone and forgot that purplerain was still running :)


Installing Cydia right now.
 
I believe he was kicked for releasing some beta software. However, he's an extremely gifted person. He has found many exploits which nobody else has and without him, the iphone hacking scene would certainly not be in its current position.

Im using purplera1n and it's working great

I did the purplera1n JB and have not had any issues, in fact I like the fact you don't have to restore to JB.

Hell, they do the same thing.

Dev Team is waiting on the 3.1 release. That could take up to a month or two.
 
I agree with most of the previous relpies... Geohotz JB works like a charm, and I didn't have to download 200+MB of firmware plus software plus restore... Couple clicks and it was done! like Geohotz said himself ( I think)... It's jailbreakng the way it should be! I say do it! Why wait till 3.1 just cause the dev team is scared to make a move
 
Purplera1n now, Dev Team later (if it's even worth it). You can't really screw up when you can always restore by DFU mode.

People talking about how purplera1n is buggy or in beta did not use the software. It works fine, most of the bug is from the 3GS OS itself. However, everything works perfectly fine if you know what you are doing. You can't brick your iPhone.

I'm sick of Dev Team making posts about their unreleased 3GS JB. Making videos and teasing everybody with it and then go on and say they won't release it until after 3.1. Talking about how it's for the greater good. But it doesn't matter, they don't owe me anything and I don't owe them anything. If they don't want to release it, someone else will and someone else did.
 
there is no "official" JB. yes, the dev team has released good software in the past, but geohot is the ORIGINAL "dev team". he's the one who found all the relevant exploits used for the 3G, 3GS, and even 2G touch.

i fully agree with his sentiments about this whole waiting game... why not just wait until 3.2? why not 3.5? 4.0?

and it's really annoying to have to sit and watch videos of them using their own jailbreak and telling everyone else not to attempt it, like it's their sole right to crack apple software/hardware. it's not.
 
I must say that Geohot is the way to go. I failed so many times to sucessfully jailbreak with the dev teams redsn0w. It would not get off the waiting for reboot part. I tried everything and still no cigar. Geohots version all you have to do is push one button and sit back. I am on vista and the first one was a sucess for me. The only thing that sucked was no winterboard but todaythey updated and BOOM(John Madden Voice) everything works. There is no reason to do the dev team.Im not saying i wont in the future just for right now a one button puss seems to be the easy route.
