Yes. Could be one of those (or both).... Is this a LCD screen issue or video card problem?

Yes. Could be one of those (or both).
Be sure to try reseating the LVDS (video) ribbon cable on the logic board.
Is yours a retina model, or the non-retina 2012 MBPro?
If non-retina, you can try reseating the RAM sticks.
And, you could try an external display. If that works normally, and the other plugs or reseats don't help, then likely it's the LCD panel.
If the external has a similar issue, that should indicate the graphics chip. That's not replaceable, so you would need to replace the logic board to fix that issue.
I looked into this but when i put in the serial on my mac is said it no longer covered. You could ask at an Apple store, or other Apple service provider. Your issue may fall under this program.
Did you have it fixed by a third party? If so, was it the logic board or the LCD screen or both?I had this exact same issue. Went to the an AppleStore. They offered to replace the screen and logic board for 1k. I thankfully refused. The seller of your MBP probably knew about it too. I had it disappear and reappear as well. Sometimes it went away for weeks and then it came back. You purchased faulty hardware.
You may have a Late 2011, and not a 2012 version. The 2011 was dropped from that repair program at the end of 2016.
Quickest way to make sure about which one you have is to view the Model Identifier, which is in your System Information/Hardware Overview.
2011 is MacBookPro8,2
2012 is MacBookPro9,1
Thanks for thought. That tool simply tells you that you are outside of the normal warranty coverage.
The program mentioned at the video issues support page MIGHT still apply to your MBPro.
Best way to discover for sure is to call AppleCare, and let them tell you at that time that you are no longer included in that video issues repair program.
I fixed it myself... well kind ofDid you have it fixed by a third party? If so, was it the logic board or the LCD screen or both?
it's a interesting solution.I fixed it myself... well kind of
it's a interesting solution.
So it ended up being a display issue after all..... You replaced the display with a lower resolution one?I replaced the panel itself (not the whole top case) for ~50. my solution might not be for everyone. but I truly love my laptop, because it's... well... mine and no one in their right mind would want a laptop like that
I didn't want to spend the cash on a used top case because a) they are really hard to find (matte screens w/ higher res) and b) they are overpriced. there is no way I'm going to drop another 3-500 bucks on this laptop. but as long as it works, I'm happy
