I've given up on jailbreaking. Tried the guide on crunchgear to install purplerain and it just killed my phone. Purplerain crashed halfway thru and it wiped the phone in the process.

I'm currently doing a complete restore but this jailbreak stuff is just too much of a hassle on the 3GS, DFU mode doesn't even work on the 3GS.

You are supposed to use Blackrain, not purplerain

LMAO :D
Wow, good thing he's giving up on jailbreaking cause he really sucks at it :D
You're supposed to use Blackrain not the 6 month old purplerain hack.
Also DFU mode does work for the 3GS, you might not know how to put it into DFU but it works for all iphones.

No, it doesn't:

I haven't found a single thread or video or blog or anything of anyone with a 3GS showing DFU working. All I keep finding is people with old phones saying it works and people with 3GS phones saying it doesn't work.

What tethering problem with blackra1n? Works fine for me. Can't put your 3GS in DFU mode? I did it twice to jailbreak. Your doing something wrong.

I have a 3GS and had to go into DFU once after I got the boot screen of death when I tried to reset my network settings. It worked fine for me and my phone is back in working order, just keep holding the home button and itunes will eventually pop up. Anyway update to the latest firmware and use blackra1n. You are obviously doing something wrong on your end, I suggest a bit more reading.

I've done the reading, watched the numerous youtube videos, couldn't get it to work and I've read that other people could not get it to work on 3GS phones.

Everything indicates that it does not work on 3GS, I don't need to read anymore. When I follow the instructions and can't get it to work, then do searches and see others saying it does not work, that's enough for me.

have you tried Blackra1n? I'm a total iPhone newb and I've jailbroken my wife's and my 3GSs with no problems at all.

Granted, we were lucky to get week 39 and 40 3GSs with the older boot-rom so they are not tethered, but from what I have read, Blackra1n still works on the new boot-rom (if that is relevant to you) - you just need to re-run Blackra1n if and when you need to restart your phone.

Pretty simple really?

Funny, I just did exactly what iClarified says on my 3GS and it seemed to work just fine...

Lemme just get caught up.
He tired to use someone for firmware 3.0 on his iPhone.
He doesn't think that his iPhone 3GS can go into DFU mode.

Kay I hope I'm right with that. Now for my answer.
First of all, use Blackra1n RC3.
Second, your jailbreak will only be tethered if you have an iPhone purchased after a specific point in time. And besides, I never turn off my iPod, and I don't see why you would need to turn off your iPhone.

ur obviously doing something wrong. there are plenty of people including me that were successful in getting the 3gs in DFU mode.

Guize seriously!! He red and wached uTOob videows! 3GS jus CAN'T do DFU!!

I hope you don't carry this attitude into the real world.

I have a 3GS (in fact, I've had two of them), and both of them have gone into DFU mode without any problems. In fact, would you like me to do it and post a screenshot for you of my OS X System Profiler which will even show it as being in DFU mode? Anything to stop people from claiming things as fact without trying it for themselves - if you can't get it into DFU mode then it's a user issue, nothing to do with the phone.

@macrumors-james

I have had both my 3GS phones in DFU mode several times in the last 2 months.

It is very doable and I can usually do it the first time.

Sorry to say this, but it's operator error, just like the reason you somehow got the idea purplera1n would JB a 3GS phone with new firmware.

To the original thread starter, please for the love of all that is Apple, do not try to jailbreak your phone. It is well above your level of expertise. Just drop the usb cable and turn around and walk calmly away.:p

1) Purplera1n won't work with the new firmware.

2) The tethered jailbreak is not a result of the method used to jailbreak; it is a result of the new version of iBoot on the newest 3GSs. If you have such a phone, your jailbreak will be tethered.

3) The 3GS can, in fact, be placed into DFU mode. You have to time your moves right, but ultimately if you can't get into DFU mode it's because you aren't doing it right. I put the 3GS I'm typing this on into DFU mode on the first try.

TheIguana: the picture you posted is of a phone in Recovery Mode, not DFU mode. Not that this changes the fact that the 3GS can be put in DFU mode.

ETA: Just for fun I just put my phone in DFU mode. Took me two tries (first time I held the sleep/power button about half a second too long).

So you thought that using purplera1n instead of blackra1n could bypass the tethered jailbreak problem, and you seriously think that DFU mode doesn't exist in the 3GS's?

Don't jailbreak. Jailbreaking is above your level of expertise.
