for the 3Gs version, i see on iclarified that there's two options to use: purplera1n or redsnow.

which one is the most prefered? and which would be the most stable?

i have the OS 3.0 version.

i don't wanna end up bricking my phone... so any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

p.s. i thought i had the 3G version, till my bro called me today asking if i figured out what my surprise was. the phone i got from him was a 3Gs after all. 32GB worth of storage. i feel so stupid.. board members, please forgive my stupidity with apple stuff. :(

I would use redsn0w. It is made by the Dev Team, and purplera1n is the same thing almost just by some guy. The Dev Team has made way more software than he has (not that that makes a difference) but I've always used the Dev Team's software, so I have no reason to change. :)

cool beans. just waiting to DL the FW for the 3Gs and then hopefully i can JB and unlock tonight.

But purplera1n is made by geohotz, who made the FIRST jailbreak for iphone
and also the first jailbreak for 3gs

However, iPhone Dev Team release more version and more support.

Both will work.
But I would recommend you to upgrade to 3.0.1 and use redsn0w

why upgrade to 3.0.1 first? any benefit in doing so?

also, how do i upgrade it to 3.0.1; i can get the FW from iclarified right?

This is from the Dev Team blog about purplera1n vs. ultrasnow, pretty interesting:

The two pieces of code have the exact same effect on the baseband… with the difference that geohot’s exploit overwrites an arbitrary block of memory one megabyte in size. The baseband has a total of eight megabytes of memory and every bit of it is earmarked for use (except for 485212 bytes of it which we haven’t accounted for yet, but that’s still less than 1 MB). This means that eventually the area of memory geohot is using will be corrupted and 1 MB of baseband code will be corrupted (until the next reboot). How soon will this happen? Will it even matter in day-to-day use? We don’t know, because we haven’t spent much time looking. However, why take the risk when the yellowsn0w/ultrasn0w payload accomplishes the same job with no corruption?

and my favorite part. :D

We thank geohot for contributing to the scene once again. We don’t think purplesn0w is the right path, but it has certainly helped us improve ultrasn0w!

Back to business.

If you are scared about the "SMS exploit" (which is absolutely ridiculous) then you should update to 3.0.1, other than that, it's the same as 3.0. :)

what's this SMS exploit you are refering to? also, how do i upgrade to the 3.0.1 version of the fw? do i put the phone into DFU and then shift + restore and load the 3.0.1 FW for 3Gs?

It is a hack that people could "possibly" hack into your phone and get info or control it or some BS like that. But no one ever reported it happening, and that's why Apple was rushed to release that 3.0.1 update. You have the updating with DFU part perfectly correct. Do exactly what you said.

found the FW from iclarified....

Refer to this page. :)

now updating it to the FW 3.0.1, would that make any changes to the modem software? i heard that if the modem software version changes, u wouldn't be able to JB or unlock later.

I use purplera1n and it works great, always has. The problem I had with redsn0w when downgrading from 3.1 to 3.0 was that since the phone shows the 'Connect to iTunes' screen after downgrading, you can't activate it before running the jb tool. With purplera1n, it's no problem - running purplera1n jailbreaks it and kicks it out of the connect to iTunes screen, whereupon you can activate normally. Redsn0w, OTOH, will 'hacktivate' your device if you run it prior to activation (which you have to do when downgrading) ...

Anyway, purplera1n is the easiest method. It works very well, and I've never had any problems with it whatsoever.

hey guys, i've DLed the 3.0.1 FW for the 3Gs, but was not able to upgrade it from the exisiting FW 3.0.

i tried putting it into DFU mode, where itune said the phone will need to be restored before using it. then i hold down shift + restore and tried to load the 3.0.1 FW (iPhone2,1_3.0.1_7A400_Restore) and it would tell me the FW is not compatiable.

any other ways to update it?

You can't upgrade to 3.0.1 or restore 3.0 stock through iTunes any more. Apple stopped signing the 3.0.x firmware files on Sept. 9. If you have 3.0 on your phone now, you should just skip the restore/upgrade part and jailbreak using redsn0w.

I used purplera1n because I think it is easier and I haven't had any problems since it first came out.

If this were 3.0.1, you can only use redsn0w because purplera1n does not support 3.0.1, however, Cydia never collected hashes for 3.0.1 (just 3.0.0) and therefore your only choice is 3.0.0, if you were lucky enough to have your phone hashed.

In that case, both options are available, and I prefer purplera1n for 3.0.0 because its easier.

ok, i was able to JB with redsnow using the 3.0 FW.

after JB, i proceed to unlock using ultrasn0w. but when i first lanched cydia, it asked if i wanted to update the essentials, complete update, or developer. it said i need to do that in order to JB later on when i'm on 3.1.

so i went ahead and just update the essentials and then proceed to entering the ultrasn0w http address. during loading, there's some error like it can't fetch some data and what not, but once i hit ok, it went again and said the same thing like it can't fetch this and that.

Error: Refreshing Data
Failed to fetch
http://www.ispaziorepo.com/cydia/apt/.Release.gpg NetDB: Open nodename nor sevname provided, or not known

but afterwards, i see ultrasn0w listed and proceed on as iclarified showed. however, when it comes to the final step, the ultrasn0w version i have just lets you reboot device, instead the return back cydia as stated in the iclarified.

but after that i put in a tmo phone and it just say invalid sim and ask me to connect to itune. when itune launches, it said that's not a valid sim, etc etc.

i've already turned of the network 3G before starting, so i don't know what i did wrong... ::(

For 3.0 id use purplera1n on a 3GS

Why? My understanding is that purplera1n overwrites an arbitrary block of the baseband memory, while redsn0w accomplishes the same task without doing so. Geohot may have been first, but the Dev-Team seems to have improved on his implementation of the exploit. By his own admission, his work is "fast" and "hacky" while the Dev-Team's is "slow" and "right."

IINM, what you're referring to is the unlocking tool (purplesn0w), not the jailbreaking tool (purplera1n) ...
