Push GMAIL with iPad.

I set up my iPhone gmail with exchange so it'll push.

I've tried this exact set up with my iPad and it doesn't seem to work. Has anyone else tried this or anything else to push?

Also, when my iPad is asleep is it still connected to wifi so it can receive push notifications? Seems like a dumb question but I'm having a few issues with receiving notifications I think.
 
So I am assuming here you have a wifi only iPad? The wifi is not connected when it is asleep and you will not get email pushed. It should push when the iPad is awake and in use over wifi though.

I haven't tried the exchange gmail push on the iPad, but I'm not quite sure why it wouldn't work. About push notifications, what the iPad seems to do is periodically hop on the wifi network and check for notifications, but it's not perpetually connected unless it's plugged in.
 
Holy shiz... I thought it would be able to check for push notifications all the time like my iPhone. Damn, This may make me sell and upgrade to the 3G...

But in order for my iPad to constantly get notifications like the iPhone I'd have to drop the $15 for the data from AT&T right? $15 isn't worth push notifications.

So it periodically jumps on the wifi to check? Is this confirmed or just an observation?

Not sure I agree with that. I have Gmail set to route to MobileMe on both my iPhone and iPad. When I get an email, they both ding within seconds of each other.

I agree with amro on this one. Ive set up my iPad mail the same way as my iphone with push. Gmail emails forwarded to MobileMe. Both iPad and iPhone got emails within seconds of each other, even when the iPad is locked.
 
mine is perfectly working. you might want to check your "fetch new data" settings set it into push then go to advanced choose your gmail. you should see push on the choices if you succesfully configured your gmail into push
 
I think everyone is saying the same thing in different ways. I get notifications just like on my iPhone when the gmail is fetched every 15 minutes. What Weaselboy is saying is right though, on a WiFi only iPad, you would not get a notification if you were in the middle of the desert where there was no WiFi, but you would get it on your iPhone (assuming cellular coverage were available). But sitting in my house, on or off, the email is still fetched every 15 mins by the iPad...I hear it ding upstairs when new mail arrives.
 
Maybe gmail only allows a certain number of connected devices when using exchange for push?

So your iphone could be taking precedence ?
 
I may get flames for saying this, but do you need push gmail on your iPad if you already have it on your iPhone? I recently had my MacBook, iPhone, anc iPad all near me and all signed into gchat, and when someone messaged me i got 3 different beeps. I mean, how many ways do we really need to be perpetually connected?
 
I have push gmail setup on the ipad and my iphone and it actually receives the notification about a second or two before my phone does. It is set up with real push by the way, not "checking every 15min". Wifi has to be "on" in sleep for this to be happening (obviously).

Flames not necessary. For me, it's a matter of convenience. When I'm away from the house, it's nice that I get it on the iPhone. When I'm home, I'm now mostly on my iPad, and it's nice to get it while I'm playing on the iPad.

Also, I think this discussion is based on the logic of how this should work. And since the iPad and iPhone are pretty darn close to each other, a function such as mail notification while either are "display off" should be the same as long as there is a wi-fi signal. And for both of mine, it does.
 
Fixed gmail push issues

Guys my gmail notifications were not being pushed even while i was on the ipad and obviously connexted to a wifi network! So i went to gmail help and found this

Basicaly what it says is that when setting up a gmail account to the email app, you should not specify that it is gmail and instead selext 'other' when it asks what type of account it is... If you are having the samw trouble i was, please check the link above... You may have to delete your gmail account and add it again the way it shows in the link... Gmail is pushing fine for me now... Hope this helps someone...

How'd you log into chat on the iPad?
 
wow.. push email isnt working for me either on wifi on.
i used the exact instructions as stated by the above poster.
only way the ipad will recognize email is if i go into the email application.

It wont, "instantly push".. is this an error?
 
Microsoft exchange & exchange gmail push?

With regard to getting gmail to push on my iPhone/iPad, I am assuming I am just out of luck if I need to have my work Microsoft Exchange account on my device as well?

I set up gmail via imap, and it works great. But forces me to go into mail or turn on 15min fetch. ie, there is no 'push' option under advanced in 'fetch new data' settings for Gmail via imap.

I'd love to set up gmail via exchange, but alas, these devices can only have one exchange account.

I have Gmail (exchange) set up on my wifi-only iPad and it'll receive push mail day and night whether it's asleep or not. Sometimes even before my phone gets it.

Just wanted to say thanks so much to Orlanadocano, and let everyone else know, this totally solved the gmail push problem. At least it did for me.

I don't really care if my work email is "instant" so what I did was install google calendar sync on my work computer. This syncs my work exchange calendar onto my gmail calendar. Then I set up gmail exchange so I still get all my meeting reminders on my phone.

Don't think this is true.

I use 'Push Mail' to push my Gmail. It is very precise. As soon as you receive an email it shows a notification. I have a Wifi model by the way. It didn't cost much so I'd recommend just buying the app instead of going through any hassle.
 
What changes in battery life for push gmail on wifi? I love it so far but i wonder if the battery gets drainded a lot faster.
