This plugin:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/httpmail-plugin

should work to replace Hotmail Popper. I don't know about the iPhone piece but this should get it to mail.app.

I'm sure you have your reasons for using hotmail. However, gmail, despite being beta, is the best mail service I have ever used. I would be pretty confident that hotmail, especially if you have a premium account, should let you forward you mail to a new address. Gmail lets you POP and IMAP mail for nothing, and the web interface is pretty good as well.

Thanks,

Is it fairly easy to install, setup, and configure? I don't have a Mac yet to see or test.

I have my own name as the domain (jd@johndoe.com) and I'm paid through 2012, plus I don't want to go through changing all my accounts. Don't need to change the push program for my iPhone since I'm not change that (although I'm getting ver 2.0).

I don't have a hotmail account, so I have no idea how difficult it is to setup, but I would guess it should be pretty simple.

If I understand you correctly, you have a domain but are using hotmail to host your email account(s) for the domain. Does your web hosting not include email hosting?

I'd say my move would be to move my email hosting to my web hosting provider, then just forward mail to a gmail account. You can then send/receive email from that account and have it still show jd@johndoe.com. Alternately, gmail can just POP the mail for you instead of you forwarding it, but forwarding seems better.

If you have something that works for you already, it may be worth the hassles to stay. I just think the small amount of initial work to move to a more competent email service would be worth it in the long run.

I would imagine it to be a lot simpler and secure to just get a gmail account, hotmail is antiquated, gmail has imap and doesnt restrict your use.

No, a couple of years ago Hotmail offered a special Premium account where you could pick your own domain name and it would work the same as Hotmail. For instance jd@ johndoe.com works as if it were jd@ hotmail.com. They don't offer this anymore.

No for the reasons I outlined. Just like I don't want to change my telephone number I don't want to change my email address.

Ugh, then I guess for the time being you are stuck. That's some quality lock-in they accomplished.

I still think it would be easiest to set the hotmail address up to forward to a new account, then you can gradually transition. The major issues I have with changing addresses are:
1) Telling people what the new address is.
2) Still having "access" to the old account for things like password resets on websites, etc.

The forwarding accomplishes this well, because you can send anyone you care to that your address has changed, and if you miss someone the forward will still result in your getting the message. The forward also covers the case that a web site password reset gets mailed to the old address. You can probably, if you really want to, set the new gmail (or whatever) to send your reply-to address as your old address as well. This way you can still, essentially "masquerade" as the old address for as long as you need to until you can make the whole transition.

What's truly unfortunate is that microsoft now owns the domain that your current address is set up on, so you'll never be able to actually own "your" email address.

Anyway, it seems like your original request for software to use hotmail like a POP address has been answered, and then some. As an aside, this question is probably a better fit for the "Apple Software" forum, unless you were wanting help programming your own plug-in, etc.

Just tried to instal and it doesn't work with 10.5 (only 10.4). Is there an update or another program I can try?

EDIT: After some searching came up with this and it seems to be working.
