Push mail problem

M using iphone 4s on ios 5.1.1
Iv set up gmail in mail app. And have set it to push. But it does not push new mails automatically. Evrytime i have to open the mail app and fetch mails.
Plz help me out
Guid me if any changes need to be made in the mail account

Gmail has to be set up as an Exchange account on the iPhone to get push support.
