I miss this from ios4. Now with ios5 I can't disable ALL push with one switch as I used to.

My current trick is to disable data and wifi, so that a push cant come on, but that has drawbacks too.
 
You could silence the device -- unless you need it to ring or to have specific notifications.
 
Just silence the device and you'll be fine. I had the same problem when I had a Facebook account, every time someone would post something I would get a ring. Pissed me off.
 
I'm oncall for my work; can't put the device on silent. I need phone calls and SMS to come through.
