Ok, so I dove into MobileMe yesterday at work (Win XP, IE 6, 1.8 Ghz C2D, 2 GB RAM). I had previously synced my contacts, e-mail, etc. from my Mac at home to MobileMe and to my iPhone 3G. All was fine.

Yesterday, I was browsing through my contacts, and noted that I really should have a Group for my work associate's phone #s. So, I created a new group called "work" and moved the contacts into the group.

The second thing I did was to create a new group for the van pool I'm in. Called it "van pool".

One thing that was annoying, and this may be because of the browser I was using, it seemed that I could only drop contacts into groups that were visible when I first opened the window. I tried scrolling the list of groups down, but the last group that would highlight when I dragged a contact onto it was the last one visible when I opened the window. This is a problem when your new groups begin with "V" and "W"...

Anyway, through some alignment of the planets, I managed to get the Work contacts into that group using Mobile Me on my PC at work. Never did get the van pool contact in at work. At home, in Address Book, it all worked fine. When I got home, I already had the two groups, and the Work group had the contacts. I just had to move the van pool contact into the group, and all was well.

Now the interesting bit.

Mobile Me and my Mac are synced. I can make a change on one, and it reflects back to the other after a short while. Works great.

But my iPhone...

I now have two empty groups called "Group Name" (a relic, I believe, of the fact that when I opened he new group in MobileMe's web app, they have no name), and an empty group called "Van Pool". No "work" group at all. The "Group Name" groups do not exist on either MobileMe or my Mac Book Pro.

I've tried restarting the iPhone, but nothing. Mobile Me sync is active, and synced just 30 minutes ago.

Any ideas?

Update:

Added a contact on my Mac Book Pro to Address Book. Renamed it, and put it in a group.

Hour or two later, checked the iPhone...

STILL have the "Group Name" groups, an empty "Van Pool" group, and no "Work" group.

BUT...

The new contact synced and is in the right group (none of the above)...

I'm confused...

My contacts are not syncing to my 3g at all. I made sure they were correct on my Mac's address book, synced correctly to MobileMe (verified at the website), but they are not coming to my phone.

I have to manually turn off the sync feature in the setup for MobileMe on the phone, turn the feature back on, and then the new changes sync. Very inconvenient.

Sorry to hear of your predicament. I did what you mentioned, and now all three (Mobile Me, Mac & iPhone) are in sync.

It would be nice if there was a "sync now" button that could be used, rather than shutting it off, which erases all your contacts, then turning it back on again...

on your mac under system preferences what are your sync settings?

I don't have an iPhone on my so I'm kind of shooting in the dark, but have you gone settings >>email, contacts, calendars >> (account name) and pressed on for everything?

The Mac and Mobile Me sync just fine. it's Mobile Me to the iPhone that seems to have issues. Once Mobile Me sync is on on the iPhone, contacts, etc, do not sync directly (via USB) from the Mac to the iPhone.

Your instructions push the contacts and everything and makes it all up to date, but then nothing further. I have to repeat this process to update my contacts. Sort of defeats the purpose. :(

I'm starting to look for alternatives.

That's odd. Once I shut off the sync, then turned it back on, all is well. Single contacts update just fine. It was the new groups that mucked things up for me the other day.

Maybe a note over in Apple Support discussions would help?
