I don't know if this has been answered before, but will a drive from a 30GB 5G ipod work in another 5G ipod that previously held a 60GB drive? a friend of mine has working spares and if it works it'll save me some money.

Seeing that the 30gb hd is likely smaller than the 60 was, I don't see why it wouldn't work. As far as I'm aware there were no differences in firmware between the two.
it works, it just gets really annoying having the HDD rattle around inside ... I would try to pick up a used 30GB back plate with the battery, headphone jack, and hold switch for cheap from ebay or somewhere- then you have yourself a 30GB 5G ipod
