Hi, I just bought an external hard drive that has more than enough room to hold a bootable copy of my laptop (w/Super Duper or CCC), with plenty of space still left behind. Is it possible to set it up so that I have the Super Duper/CCC backup taking up a portion of the drive, and a way to dump other random stuff into the rest of the free portion of the drive? How do I do that? Do I need to set up a partition? And would I be better off using Super Duper or Carbon Copy in this situation?

Thanks for answering what I assume is a Level 1 question.

I do this. Google partitioning hard drive, and an Apple article should show up giving you step by step how you can split your hard drive into different partitions using Disk Utility. Very easy. You can then choose which partition you want to use as backup or storage. You can have multiple partitions, 4 or 8.

I prefer Carbon Copy Cloner, buy a license. Their $50(or whatever) is completely worth saving you the headache of losing your data. They also have a great database you can search for any questions or issues you have. They also have great support, if you hit a wall they will answer your question.

Thank you so much! Lots of people suggest Super Duper over CCC, but then it appears that there has historically been an issue w/hidden partitions or recovery partitions. (I have no clue what that means.) I'm not reading that Super Duper no longer has that issue, but I'm glad to hear how seamless and helpful Carbon Copy has been for you.
