Putting faith in AT&T...

I have a WiFi iPad, and LOVE IT. My internet at home, well, sucks. I have great 3G coverage at home, with good download speeds. So, I preordered a 3G iPad today. I hope AT&T sticks with the "unlimited is unlimited" data statement they made.

Will the Apple Store take back my WiFi model? I am OK with a small restocking fee if they will. Or, is eBay the right move to make to recoop some of the money from my WiFi iPad?
 
There is a chance of no restocking fee for returning it. With the shortages and delays of delivery to the UK, you can do better than break even by selling.
 
AT&T is exactly the reason I didn't get 3G. They suck. 3G sucks. I love my wifi. If you've used your ipad a lot or had it for a while they'll probably charge you for restocking, but you sound like you're already cool with that. Good luck.

I am no AT&T fan myself, but it is better than my "hi-speed" internet from CenturyTel... I get a blazing 450kbps on DSL. 3G is at least 2mbps. Not a cheap decision to make, but the graphics of the iPad are so nice I want to watch video, etc. That is where the faith comes in... trusting AT&T will really allow me to have unlimited data for $30, so I can use apps like Netflix.
 
I think the whole point boils down to one question: "Is the iPad 3G unlocked?" And the answer in short is "Yes".

Therefore, although there may be frequency issues, depending on if its triband or quadband (800/900/1800/1900), iPad can theoretically use any micro-sim card in any network as you desire.

Um no, I don't believe you're correct there but time will tell.

In the US, although it's unlocked, you can only use ATT. It does not support the frequencies used by T-Mobile.

Shouldn’t the iPad support all of T-Mobile’s EDGE network and some of its 3G network? T-Mobile uses both the 1700MHz and 2100MHz spectrum for 3G and 1900MHz for EDGE.

Wi-Fi + 3G model
UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

Although their 3G network is so small, it probably wouldn’t be worth the effort.

AT&T works great for me here in west Tenn. 3G coverage is greaat.
 
eMail Campaign?

How about an email campaign to AT&T expressing displeasure at the lack of tethering capability on the iPhone. It just doesn't make sense. If they start losing customers/revenue then who is the loser? I really hope another provider gets the iPhone. Although I'm stuck until the end of my contract perhaps AT&T will start to get it. With over 500,000 WiFi iPads sold and probably the majority are iPhone owners (just a guess), AT&T could be the big loser. AT&T its time for a wakeup call!

The problem we have right now is that there is no place to go. AT&T is the only choice for the iPhone and there really is not an alternative phone with equivalent usability. (Skip the replies about pre(s) and any reasonable person knows android just isn't there yet). I would not even mind paying something for tethering, the phone has supported it over a year.

I totally agree with you but we should not have to pay for tethering. We already pay for the data plan. I wouldn't mind paying perhaps an extra $10.00 but if it was more it would be a ripoff. I'm already paying Approx. $120.00 per month for AT&T wireless (1 iPhone and 1 do nothing phone family plan) plus my home Verizon Fios fees for the internet. In the end its a moot point since AT&T doesn't seem to care but if another carrier gets the iPhone, look out AT&T. I'm sure they will lose customers.

Release a 3.1.3 jailbreak for the 3GS and I (and prob a few thousand others) will do that. Until that jailbreak comes out, that's simply not an option for quite a few people.

I have a dumb question. I've always maintained that I would not jailbreak my iPhone however, if a jailbreak came out for 3.1.3 how does that affect the phone? Does that mean that I can no longer sync through iTunes, download apps or auto sync through my MobileMe account? I just don't know the ramifications of doing it. I still don't think I would do it but I'm curious.

you can do all of that with a jailbroken iphone.

Not quite.

The iPad, like any other AT&T device, will not work with T-mobile's 3g network - the frequencies are not compatible. T-mobile 3g is on 1700mhz, while AT&T 3g is on 850/1900mhz. You should be able to get Edge data on T-mobile since the iPad is technically unlocked, but the real problem is finding a carrier that uses the micro-SIM card that the iPad will be using. I'm pretty sure T-mobile does not use these in any of their devices.

Bottom line, no 3g on T-mobile.

T-Mobile was the first U.S. carrier to announce support for Micro-SIM at CES before Apple even announced the iPad. So, it’s coming.

However, the actual reason the iPad won’t work on T-Mobile’s 3G is because T-Mobile uses AWS which requires the use of both the 1700 and the 2100 MHz spectrum (uplink/downlink).

But T-Mobile’s 3G coverage area is so small it doesn’t really matter.

FYI — UTMS 2100 is a European standard which is why the iPad supports it.
 
I would put it up on Ebay. With the recently announced International release delay there are plenty of people who would pay double what you did for your iPad.
