Putting non-iTunes music on an iPhone XR.

I would like to add some non-iTunes music to my iPhone XR. In the past, I did this by putting the music onto iTunes on my laptop and syncing my laptop with my iPhone. Being a little slow, I now think I see that because my laptop has Music instead of iTunes, I can't sync anymore unless I subscribe to Apple Music. (Makes me an anti-trust fan for sure.)
