pwnage 3.1.4 and tethered jailbreak

I apologize in advance because I know this is probably discussed many times and I've done a search but still not able to get a clear answer on this.

I just got a new 3GS with 3.1.2/5.11.7 and the latest iBoot. I would like to jailbreak and unlock it.
I've already tried to jailbreak/unlock using blackra1n and it was successful, but because of the iBoot issue, I need to tethered the phone to a computer when I do a reboot. PIA, something I'd like to avoid if possible.

So correct me if i am wrong, I understand I can also use the latest Pwnage to jailbreak 3GS 3.1.2 (instead of jailbreaking with blackra1n) and then install blackra1n off Cydia to unlock 5.11.7. So my question is if I use pwnage, would I still have to tether the phone to a computer to reboot? Checked the dev team site and could not find an obvious answer to this either.

Neither jailbreak solution currently provides an untethered jailbreak for the new version of iBoot. Nobody has yet discovered an exploit in the new iBoot which will allow one to permanently disable signature checking for the OS. iBoot therefore will not load the unsigned jailbroken OS unless you hook it to a computer and re-run blackra1n to inject the code necessary to get past that spinning Apple logo.

Nobody has any idea when or if an exploit might be found to untether the jailbreak. But although it's a bit of a PITA, it's not crippling. Just make sure you do any Cydia updates near a computer and you should be fine for the most part. I haven't rebooted my phone in 10 days, and then it was only because of an update to MobileSubstrate that I could easily have put off until I was near a computer. Of course Murphy's Law would say that your phone will freeze up just when you're away from all computers and expecting an important call...
