I'll be completely honest, that diagram really doesn't make much sense to me. I am just looking to jailbreak, not unlock, so am I fine with just sticking with blackra1n or should i try Pwnage?
if you already blackra1ned then stay there, if not then depends on device and current firmware.
not as black and white as that. depends on device you have and if you want to preserve the baseband you have for unlocking. blackra1n supports more devices, but can't unlock afterwards. pwnage will let you create custom ipsw to preserve older baseband for unlocking. if you are currently running official 3.1 or above then either one will work (just note the devices they are intended for).
Basically this is the answer. They both have the end result. Blackra1n just came out while Pwnage had just become a MacOS-only program and 'us' WIN users had to wait for custom firmwares to update our phones.
awesome. thanks everyone for your answers. I don't mind preserving the baseband. I use a Mac but have a windows machine that i used for Blackra1n. I will rpob just stick with that until the next need to JB, then I'll go with the Mac option. Once again, thanks everyone.
A lot is going to be trial and error. I personally don't need the unlock so I decided on using blackra1n and it works great. I had previously used Pwnage tool with a custom ipsw and had problems with data speed but then again my wife is using the same custom IPSW and has no problems.
I have no way to justify this but I feel get better results when I do the upgrade through itunes with their stock ipsw then jailbreak with a program like Redsn0w or Blackra1n followed by setting it up as a new phone (not restoring a backup). Like I said though, I have no way to justify this though.

Does custom ipsw JB what ever the latest firmware is.... 3.1.2 and keep the baseband at the previous firmware... 3.1?

What is the difference between redsn0w and blackra1n? I downloaded the firmware for redsn0w onto my iPod Touch first generation and i got Cydia and Winterboard but then I heard someone mention blackra1n. Is it better or worse?

Redsnow jailbreaks 3.0 and 3.0.1 on either Mac or PC and unlocks 2G iPhones.
Pwnage Tool jailbreaks 3.1 and 3.1.2 on most devices by creating a customized firmware file which you restore to in iTunes. This allows you to upgrade to 3.1 or 3.1.2 without losing your old baseband and the ability to unlock with ultrasn0w. It does not work on the newest iPhone 3GS's or on iPod Touch 2Gs that aren't already jailbroken. It runs only on Macs, but custom ipsw files can be installed from any computer that runs iTunes. Some consider it more stable than blackra1n.

thanks! I have Redsn0w on my iPod touch 1st gen. and i can't quite figure out how to get free apps? i can change my background and stuff with cydia but some people have things like apps from the app store which they got for free? is there some online manual i can read on how to use winterboard?

I must say it was very interesting to find this thread of discussion. Sought information about why use a jailbreak method over another and information have been found very useful.
However, I do not understand the reviews (in my opinion, not justified) expressed by kokorosabishii. Why blackra1n should be less stable than a pwnage? I own an iPhone3GS and an ipodtouch 2nd.The first is blackra1n jailbraked while the second was pwnag'ed. Both seem equally stable.
The only reason I did not use blackra1n onto iPod is linked to the problem of tethered reboot (connect to your Mac in case of power off of device).

If blackra1n works for you, fantastic! I've also had no trouble with it. Some people have had problems with it, though, ranging from hanging when trying to jailbreak to Wi-Fi dropouts after jailbreaking.
Also, blackra1n WILL do an untethered jailbreak with any device that can be pwnaged. If your device is capable of an untethered jailbreak, blackra1n will do it for you. It's only on 3G Touches and newer iPhone 3GSs that you'd have a tethered jailbreak.

No, if you're tethered now you'll get a tethered jailbreak with any other app out there. There's no way around that, right now at lesst
