I have used pwnage tool in the past but what is the difference between
pwnage tool and Blackra1n I am just looking for a Jailbreak not
an Unlocking tool

After you have Jailbroken it using Pwnage Tool can you Unlock it then, and how do you Unlock a Jailbroken 3GS with version 3.12

First of all, as others have pointed out to you, it is 3.1.2 not 3.12. Those would be very different things. Please pay attention to this detail.

Secondly, yes, you can unlock. What unlock you use depends on what version of the baseband you have. If you have 4.26.08 then you use ultrasn0w; if you have 5.11.07 then you use blacksn0w. Check Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware to find out which you have.

I have used Blackra1n since the day it was released on my 3GS, My girlfriend's 3G and my brothers Touch 2G and no problems whatsoever on all 3. I recommend you use Blackra1n. It's easier to use and gets the job done.

Vandam, the OP has used PT before and probably has 4.26.08 which means that he can preserve the possibility of an ultrasn0w unlock. Since that is the case, and since there have definitely been issues reported with blacksn0w, he would be very wise to use PT, especially since he already knows it and will have to upgrade anyway. Finally, while your blackra1n experience has been good, there are definitely people who have problems after using blackra1n. I think it is irresponsible to recommend blackra1n to someone in the OP's position.

Ok Dad, I think everyone knew I was talking about 3.12 so why are you so critical on everyone's posts, who cares it is a point of reference

Like I said who cares

LOL! i would have hoped you but as you continued to write 3.12 (very comical i might add)i guess you don't.
Seriously though, it can be quite important using correct terminology in these circumstances because next time you need help on a certain product there might actually be product/firmware equivalents of 3.12 and 3.1.2 and you would get the wrong advice.

In my experience, I have found that posters who cannot discern details well enough (in this case to be able to relate what firmware they have installed) are generally the same posters who cannot accurately follow the steps in a tutorial.

ie, they cannot get details correct and their next post always begins with "Help".

I have seen this a hundred times in posts here...... can't get the details correct equates to probably gonna screw up the jailbreak process.

Just to prove the point I knew what I was talking about and to please everyone, ok it was 3.1.2 (7D11) and I do not start my threads with HELP, I am fairly well enough on my own, but I reach out mostly for opinions, but I can see where that gets me here sometimes...LOL

I've used Blackra1n/Blacksn0w multiple times on 3 different 3.1.2 iPhones - 2 3GS, 1 3G. Never once had an issue - gotta hand it to Mr Hotz.

I just prefer the stock Apple logo to the Pwnage Tool pineapple, what's wrong with that?

You do realize that the PwnApple logo is entirely optional, right? All you have to do is uncheck the checkbox to change boot logo. There may be many reasons to choose blackra1n over PwnageTool, but the PwnApple is not one of them.
