Hello,

Please answer my questions honestly. If you don't know what you are talking about, please do not answer.

I have an original EDGE 8GB iPhone. It is on the AT&T network and has never been jailbroken or unlocked. It is running the official 2.0 firmware and has approximately 30 app store apps on it. Most of them were free but a few of them were paid.

Recently (as in today), two of my apps were updated. After updating them, I realized my data for them was gone. This isn't normal and hasn't happened before.

Because of this, I have decided to look into the possibility of jailbreaking my iPhone so that I can access the directory structure and backup/restore any files that are missing after an application update without having to restore completely from backup.

So, that leads me up to my questions:

1) Can I jailbreak my iPhone without changing the boot loader, unlocking, etc...? Just jailbreak?

2) I understand that after pwning an iPhone, it shows a pineapple logo when starting up. I also know you can change this logo when pwning it. Is it possible to just keep the apple logo instead?

3) If I ever decided to return to the official firmware, could I restore my iphone through iTunes to an official firmware? I understand, of course, this would remove all of my jailbroken capabilities and any apps I install that are jailbroken.

4) In regards to #3 above, if I restored to an official firmware later down the line, would my iPhone appear as though it was never modified? (since I didn't unlock or change the boot loader). I mean, can I accomplish this jailbreak without modifying the IMEI (sp?) or boot loader version?

5) I plan to start placing apps on the app store in a few months. Is it possible to develop apps, test them on a jailbroken iphone, and distribute them to the app store? (since i'm jailbroken)

6) Is the app store and its apps compatible with jailbroken firmware?

I have always thought of jailbreaking but now i actually have a reason to do so. However, I will NOT do it unless I can fully revert my iPhone to an official state. If I ever decide that the official firmware has what I need or if I decide I need support from Apple, i'd like their people to not know I ever jailbroke the phone.

What do you mean you lost some 'data'? If you lost the App itself, then you can re-download it free-of-charge from the iTMS using the same account that you bought them. If you lost data/preferences you entered into the App, I don't see why you would go through the trouble of jailbreaking to get that back instead of re-entering it.

I lost data entered into the application.

In specific, PocketMoney and SpashID.

Why would I want to reenter the data for each app every time this turns into a problem when I could just copy the "documents" folder (in the case of PocketMoney) to my computer and then restore it if an update ever fails. Seems safer the jailbreak way, assuming I like the answers to my questions.

Yes, I could just restore from my backup. Like a good person, I sync and backup my iPhone with itunes every day.

However, I just went to do a restore and itunes swears i have two backups saved. July 10th and July 11th... So either iTunes forgot about all those other backups or the dates on them are wrong. We will see as soon as my iPhone finishes restoring.
