Q: Internet sales tax confusion - Adorama, B&H or Apple??

So looking at getting a MBP and found there is not only price difference for the same model, but a tax discrepancy.
$250 difference between vendors....

B&H and Apple both charge sales tax for shipping to CA - I know Apple has to because they have stores in CA, but B&H does not.

Adorama does not charge sales tax to CA.

But both Adorama and B&H are in NY.

I thought everyone has to pay sales taxes for all states that collect tax or is that law not apply to certain stores....

Adorama $2399 shipped
B&H $2451 shipped
Apple $2650 shipped

B&H also has the option to apply for and use their credit card and save the tax (they discount by the tax amount so everyone is happy). That works for those of us in NY anyway. You might want to inquire about it.

It depends on the state. If the state also has a use tax, everyone is required to pay that if the sales tax is not collected (e.g. online stores), so you might be looking at the difference between a store that collects up front vs a store that leaves it up to the buyer to pay at tax time, although the states are quickly catching up.

Everyone has to pay it. Who collects is is often a matter of choice.

Why is Adorama not charging tax ?

Do I have to pay my state for it ??

If your state has a sales/use tax, then you are supposed to pay it (a use tax would be paid with the state tax return). Whether or not an out-of-state store collects the tax is an ongoing issue.

B&H starts to collect sales tax for CA buyers this year, can't tell you why Adorama does not.

and yes, when you file your CA state tax return you have to declare out-of-state purchases ...

B&H started their own credit card to give you sales tax back, check out their website for details
