I have a first generation iPad which I hadn't used in quite some time. When it was last used everything was fine and it was powered off and set aside for a while (I am not sure of the length but it's probably been over 18 months). I went to do something with it the other day and it is in an endless reboot cycle. I press the power button, the Apple logo displays, then disappears a few seconds later. This process repeats indefinitely.
Thinking the issue was a very weak battery I left it plugged into a wall charger overnight. During this time the device would constantly reboot. The next day nothing changed so I began searching on the Internet to which I found instructions on resetting the iPad by pressing the power and home buttons. This didn't appear to do anything so I continued to try various combinations, even those for later iPad models, and eventually stumbled across the combination of pressing the home button and then the power button together. This brought up the following display:
This was encouraging so I unplugged the cable from the wall adapter and plugged it into my 2012 MacBook Pro. To which nothing happened. The system wasn't rebooting nor did performing the key sequence bring up the display. Thinking the MBP didn't have sufficient power I connected it to my 2010 Mac Pro. The results of the MP was the same as the MBP.
Does anyone have any suggestions? My gut tells me the battery is the issue and no amount of coaxing is going to restore it to operation without replacing it. But I hold out hope so here I am.
