I just got an older iMac. From the order number, I think it's one of the 2000, five flavor models. I noticed the first day that I plugged it in and powered it up, that after the computer goes to sleep it has trouble waking. While asleep it will not wake when keyboard is touched, and if I push the power button it shuts down. The unit is running OS 10.4, and energy saver settings are set to default, with option for power button to wake. Any ideas? I would also like to upgrade the hard drive from the original 10 g to something more usable. I've read that the largest capacity drive I can use would be 120 g--is that an absolute, or is there some squish room there? I ask because an acquaintance has a 200 g drive that they coulees sell me, but I'm not sure it would work.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

You can use a larger drive but the first partition MUST be no larger the 120Gb. The other partition can be as large as you want. But it'll only boot from 120Gb or less sized drives. As per your sleeping problem, I've never heard of a G3 iMac doing that. How much ram does it have and what's its CPU speed. You can check by clicking the Apple in the top left and selecting "About this Mac".

My CPU speed is 400 MHz, and the ram is 128 MB. I'm going to get more ram--two 512 sticks for 1 gig total. It also makes a slightly high pitched sound with the hard drive running, but that seems to be getting better the longer I use it. I'd also like to get a wiles card for it. Does anyome know if those are still available?
Thanks!

PS: how would I go about resetting the PMU on this old of a machine? I read a blurb online about newer computers (shift,l control, option, power), but don't know if it would be the same process for this computer.

On another note, it's a great little computer for the money I paid. It's one of the strawberry colored ones, with matching keyboard and hockey puck mouse. I installed Word and it seems to work fine.

Thanks again!

Are you aware that those are old scsi drives too?

nope, no SCSI in that one. by the g3/400 imac, they were using IDE/PATA drives. there is the 120gb limit, but that was already mentioned.

7200rpm drives really speed these old systems up, but watch out for the extra heat if this will be in a small/hot room.

with good airflow/cooling use a 7200rpm drive, with small/hot room, stick to a 5400rpm drive. best of luck.
