as far as i know and some of the research i have done, if a phone has Quad band it is capable of 3G, its not a hardware upgrade that would be needed, its just software. So whats to stop Apple from doing a software update and enableing 3G, i bets its just that at&t data network is not ready for the volume yet. Any thoughts?

No - I don't know all the details behind it, since I really don't care that much about cell phones. The quad band phone can be used on any network, since using the variety of bands compensates for differences bwtween countries. 3G is a whole other ball of wax. It has to do with the transmission speed.
I guess it's a question of what type of communication vs. the speed of communication. Interdependant, but not related.

Quad band refers to supporting frequencies in use around the world.
3G requires different hardware.
It is not unknown for a phone to have the hardware and not be activated until later, but in all those cases the manufacturer of course told potential buyers, because it's a marketing point. Hasn't happened here.

ive found out that there is only G on the phone i think. Apple stores now have 2 wireless networks Apple Store, and Apple Demo, N for the new machines and 1-on-1 customers with new lappys and a G network for iPhones and older machines...
