Quad-core nMP with D700s? A mis-match?

Am I being penny-wise, pound-foolish foregoing the Hexa-core, and instead getting the Quad-Core with the D700s? Perhaps the Quad-core and the D700s are a mis-match in the sense that to get the most of the D700s they have to be matched up with the appropriate CPU??

Does depend completely on your use case. If you dare you can always upgrade the CPU later. Whereas the GPU's probably not.

Depends what you are using it for

It depends upon the apps you are running. Will they use CPU or graphics? Up the number of cores or GPU accordingly.

I'd say as future proof a buy for a 6.1 as you can get. Upgrade the CPU and ram on the grey market, maybe even the PCIe storage cards will become available more cheaply in future or a standard ngff card which it's based on can be modified to fit.

If any exceedingly rich poster is willing to donate me one for helping them out I will be happy with that spec for sure!

I'll be using the nMP for video editing using Final Cut Pro X which will use all 12 cores, but none of my projects are 4k. I'd say I'd be using FCP about 25% of the time, Aperture, Pixelmator and/or Photoshop 20% of the time. iWork & Office 25% of the time. Logic X 10% of the time, and gaming 20% of the time on Steam using Windows 8.1 via Bootcamp.

I could go all out and get Hexa-core/D700s, but feeling uncomfortable with the price.

At a guess for you I would go GPU - Memory - CPU - SSD in that order. But thats a guesstimate as we don't have enough real world tests to compare the different machines yet.

I would consider sticking with your original plan, see how it goes then if you need more oomph get a CPU upgrade from OWC. Prices may come down for the ludicrous levels for the octo core which cos of turbo boost seems to be the ideal Xeon to have inside the can.

Not at all if the apps you use are GPU heavy but not CPU heavy.
