I am planning on building a moderate size supercomputer in the next 6-8 months. I have about $300,000 to spend on hardware, software, and ancillary components (racks, switches, cables). I already have the necessary electrical and HVAC set ups and plenty of labor.

I have my eye on two racks of 32 xServe G5s and two 14TB xRAIDs.

What are the chances that Apple will upgrade the xServe G5s to have quad-cores?

Does anyone have an estimate for what the LINPACK score would be with current xServe configuration vs the potential quad-core xServes?

Soon, it's gotta be soon. Apple has to, its required that they release the QUAD for Server products. If they don't I'll be floored. Unless the next server updates are dual-core dual processor Intels?!!!

Yes, rpavlick3, please use your awesome hunk of Mac computing muscle (when you get it) to help our MR folding@home team. We would be forever grateful to you! :) :) :) :) :)

I wouldn't mind Apple coming out with some new Quad-core Xserve's...I am sure it should be out soon because they haven't updated their Xserve line in a few months and I have also received a lot of deals regarding the current Xserve's.

Actually it is two racks of 32 Xserves for a total of 64 machines. I phrased it in the first person for the sake of simplicity. Actually I'll be working for an research institute and we will be using the cluster to run many climate simulations to better understand climate-vegetation interactions and how the climate-vegetation system reacts to global change.

Too bad, he's gonna use it for climate sims, not folding... :D Anyhow, with the current G5 xServes they had to put a "gap" in the middle, that wasn't on the previous dual 2.0 system, because of heat. The dual cores will run hotter, so cooling is an issue right now. Look at the heatsink of the Quad, it looks more intense then previous models. But I also hope that they will come soon (read hope, not think!)
