Tried to open a quark file on disc and Quark crashed. Now if I create a new document it will not save (unknown error - 30871) - if I try to open any existing document it crashes on opening. Quark seem baffled. Had me throwing away extensions, Jaws folder, etc and re-installing but all to no avail. Quark managed to make it work in Safe Boot but not in normal mode. They've gone away to think about it. Anybody else any ideas please.

Give Quark the Heave Ho

I am a Graphic Artist that worked for a weekly newspaper. We had Quark 4 when I started and it was ok but limited in its features compared to Quark 6 which we got next. Q6 had moveable layers etc. but was absolutely the most unstable POS (Piece of S---) program that I have had the displeasure to use. It would crash for no reason, any reason, because it wanted too, sometime, anytime, and definitely AT THE WORST POSSIBLE TIME. They did get a copy of Q7 and it did seem better, stability wise, and had new features for the new version.

I got a book and a copy of InDesign and learned that great program. I did all my advertising work in In Design.

Take that Q6 and pitch it as far as you can.....get Q7 if you must use Quark..... But go to In-Design you can do sooooo much more with it, and it is just such a better program and a rock solid platform.

Problem solved

In reply to the last message We are now using Adobe CS3 InDesign and I agree it is very easy to use. However, there are times when we have to open old Quark files and we don't want the expense of upgrading to Qk 7 when we will be using it less and less (all new stuff is InDesign).

Anyway, Quark have contacted me again (3rd time on this problem) and have actually solved the problem.

After further exhaustive tests etc and re-installations they solved it by creating a "Virtual Printer" and making this the default printer. I don't think even they are quite sure why it works but it does.

I thought I would post this so that if anyone else has a similar problem it may help.
