I got the 10.5 pre-ordered last week on the 13th, but there's a shadow on the screen that I find intrusive. I'm planning on bringing it into my local Apple Store tomorrow for an exchange/upgrade (it occurs to me that there's a relatively small price premium for 256 vs 64, so may as well if I'm returning anyway). Only thing is that Apple Live Chat told me last week that tomorrow would be my last return day because I ordered on the 6th! Is this true? I appreciate that the the 2 week return period would run from purchase date but it seems incredibly unfair to penalise early adopters by enforcing this from before the item is even available in stores! Wondered what others have experienced with this scenario in the past? Also, my iPP was a gift. Will there be issues exchanging/returning it from that pov? I do have the receipt/proof of purchase.

Apple's return policy is you can exchange/return within 14 days of delivery so you should be ok to return or exchange. I'll give warning though they may try to say you can't exchange an online order in store so will try to process as a refund then charge you for a new order even though it is possible to exchange.

For more peace of mind you can see Apple's policy here

What about gift policy? My father bought it for me on his card, how much of an issue will that be? Will they be happy to phone him to process the card side of it?

I can't say for sure if they would allow a transaction without your father being present but I would think not. One option would be if you want to upgrade the storage is to exchange and pay the price difference in cash or if you have one use your card.

Are you able to borrow your father’s card and PIN?

If you are going in with the sole purpose of returning the 64 and purchasing the 256, they will probably refund the 64 to gift cards and then pay for the 256 from gift cards + difference on card or cash

Shops don’t tend to care about the name on the card, they just care if you know the PIN or not. Most don’t even look at the name!

That's what I thought which was why I asked my father to give me his card when I saw him yesterday but he forgot to bring it and my appointment is tomorrow! If the card wasn't physically needed for the return/exchange I could get the number/pin OK.

I'm less worried about the upgrade element as I would obviously pay the difference outright myself—but if the gift card element was permitted that'd be fine too.

Call your local store, and when you get the automated voice prompts, say “Manager”.... you’ll then get put through to a person and I’d just be honest and ask them.

I don't think you'd need to exchange for gift cards.

I took my iPad in for exchange and wanted to get AppleCare while I was there. It was possible for me to exchange my online order in store and pay the difference for the AppleCare. They didn't ask to see my card only the receipt but that may be due to the billing information was using my name.

Why not just set up a return with the online store, then get your father to pay for a reserve and collect at the local store for the iPad you want. You can then just pay him the difference.

I may end up having to do that—and if I'd been thinking straight when we ordered that's exactly what we would've done. For some reason I didn't compute that the iPPs would actually be *instore* the same day they were due to be posted out. Could've saved a lot of hassle if we'd done it that way, given the screen quality issue! Oh well, tomorrow well tell the tale.
