Question about 7970 GHz/GTX 780/Titan Under OSX 10.8.3 & Beyond (Mavericks)

I know there are threads in regards to this but would just like to know the current state of things before making the leap on a graphics card. A little confused by the current threads.

Considering it seems to be the text Mac Pro will favor AMD I expect drivers for AMD cards to improve across the board. Just confused on a couple things so would love it if someone could clarify a couple things for me.

in 10.8.3 & Beyond (Mavericks as well) is the 7970 specifically one like the MSI R7970 BE supported? (Other than boot screen), also is there anyway to flash one of these and gain a boot screen without losing the increased clock rates?

Also what is the current state of the Titan and 780 on 10.8.3 and beyond (including with Nvidia Web Drivers) as well as with Mavericks

I saw it mentioned previously that the 7970 only works at PCIE 1.0 Specs unless flashed, is this still the case or do we still need a flash to get it to PCIE 2.0?

I think I will go with a 7970 over a GTX 780 or 680 because it seems that Apple is favoring OpenCL which AMD seems to handily beat Nvidia at this point.

I do Video Editing and 3D Modeling, Animation, and Rendering. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Also this may sound dumb but could I later add an Nvidia card just for CUDA if I find the need in the future and run my displays through the 7970 and let the Nvidia do CUDA? (Probably a 780)

and before anyone jumps all over me on this I am aware I will need a auxiliary power supply and will be doing that with this.

So far 10.8.3+ supports 7970 OOTB and nothing indicates that it would change in the future.

10.9 is a different beast - 7970 uses FireGL W9000 OpenGL engine and it's hard to predict whether it will stay like this. At least until final release will be available.

Flashing isn't enough. AMD cards require moving/removing resistors on PCB to enable 5.0 GT/s

Yes, but maybe it will be more effcient to use one card which supports both acceleration types on a good level. Such as GTX580.

If I were to just use one card a Titan would out perform a 580 in OpenCL OpenGL and CUDA correct?

So would buying a Titan be a good idea if I didn't want to invest more money into it for at least the next year?

A Titan would be well supported with new Nvidia Web Drivers under 10.8.3 and Nvidia drivers included in Mavericks beta correct?

If I were to do that what is the recommended method for connecting a titan to dual Cinema Displays? (mini Display port) I am assuming a 100 dollar adaptor. Thanks! Would there be any issues in continuing to use the 5870 to power the secondary display 24 inch Cinema and Power the main display through a Titan?

Hey guys don't mean to bump my own thread but I'm close to pulling the trigger on a Titan Superclocked and just wanted to verify that it does function with OpenCL under Mavericks before doing it

Also could someone tell me if this would work for http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G0P58577 pushing a 24inch Cinema Display as the Titan doesn't have 2 Mini Display ports

or should I just continue to run the 5870 to push the 24 and use the Titan to push the 27 + a small cintiq

Also a little apprehensive about spending 1000 on a Video Card is the performance difference between a 780 and a Titan justifiable in real world performance especially in the apps I mentioned before? And does the 780 work like the titan in OSX or have any issues (assuming it should have similar support since it has the same architecture underneath neutered

Also if I do this is there anyway to set the than as the preferred card?

I personally would get the EVGA GTX 780 Superclocked. It gives almost identical performance to the Titan and it's a few hundred dollars cheaper.

It is the card I am running in my system, and I can confirm that it works just fine!!

I have been looking for something like this for a long time, as I currently am running a GTX 780 with two DVI displays...but my third display is a Mac 27" with mini displayport and I have been using my 5870 to run it.

^^^^Yes, they work. When I was using my flashed AMD HD6870, I used the MDP on the video card to the Display Port on my HP IPS Display. Worked like a charm.

I have a 12" Wacom Cintiq that I have connected to the GTX 780 as well as my old 30" Apple Cinema Display. My 27" LED Cinema display is the only screen connected to my 5870.

I use a host of applications that I regularly use, from Aperture, Corel's Painter 12, Final Cut Pro X etc.

Thanks for the Info I pulled the trigger on the FSP X5 Booster and a Geforce Titan

The 780 wasn't available and I figure that it's better to go for the best, because maybe in the future I do something where the titan has a significant advantage.

Thanks for the advice I already got myself a display port to mini display port adaptor I just hope the gefen converter I got will be good enough to run my other display. Once i get stuff later this week.
