Question about Air Video on iPad

Hi everyone,

I recently downloaded Air Video for the iPad and it is really amazing. I was wondering if someone can shed some light as to how I can use this application no matter where I am located. In other words, not in my home near my computer. Thanks.

You need to type in the Key/ or PIN (9 digit number) into your iPad from the menu. It is found under the settings menu rom Air Video.

This hooks you in from afar
 
It does give you the ability to connect remotely using an access PIN. I was able to remote into my AVI/DivX/MKV movie collection that I had not yet converted to MP4 for my Apple TV, and watch it perfectly on the iPad.
 
The password can be set in the server software and on your iPhone/ipad tap settings and scroll down to see air video settings you can set it to allow 3g streaming and remember your password.

sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread, but i'd like to ask another question if it's OK :)

I've set up AirVideo on my xp laptop with ease. but i can't get it to work on my macbook air. My AirVideo client on iPad can't even connect to the server on macbook air on local network (it sees the server but keeps timing out). i have airport expreme base station as my wireless router.

any ideas why it works flawlessly on a xp machine but not macbook air?:confused:

I do not like to leave my MBP on all day and I use my MPB for my iPhone and will be for the iPad also. I keep my Mac Pro and iMac on almost all the time. My question about Air video is this:
Can you stream from any computer in your home or just the one with the app? Since all apps will be on my MBP.

You can share the drives from other at home Macs to the one with Air Video Server installed. You can also share NAS drive and Time Capsule disks.

Yep, you direct AV to folders (or specific files) anywhere on the network. It's well thought out.
 
Sorry, hijack question...

Does anyone know if there is a password-protect feature on shared folders ?

For example, I have G-rated and R-rated movies shared folders. I want to restrict access to the R-rated folder when my kid is using my iPad to watch movies.

Great multi computers

Thanks for the info on using the other Macs in my house. One last question (I hope). Before I do the install, do all the other Mac's get a code, so i would have to remember 3 codes, or does it all work under one code? My guess is I would mainly use 2 of the Mac's so two passwords would not be bad but one for all would be great.
*I was just messing around with Air Video on my MPB and under setting it asked about "Video Conversion", what's the best settings for the Pad?

I haven't set it up on multiple computers but the Air Video app stores all of your PINs in a server list so you don't have to try and remember 3 different PINs

I think there's only one password to connect to a server, then you don't have to enter it again. So there's no real good way to do what you're asking, even if you set up multiple instances of the server (because once you watch a R-rated movie on it, the next guy who uses it can too).
 
Just wanted to say thanks to the OP for bringing Air Video to my attention. For what it costs it's fantastic and now has me seriously considering an iPad. Why has it changed my mind? Because suddenly the 16Gb iPad is more than big enough as I don't have to store movies on there which brings the price point for a device that'll do everything I want low enough to consider. I'll be trying it out properly with my iPod Touch in the next few days then if I find myself using it I'll consider putting a pre-order in when they announce UK prices next week (it is still next week right? I'd look in the EU thread but it's a scary, scary place....).
 
Access restrictions would be a great feature to suggest to the developers. I have the same problem with my iTunes and music/videos/podcasts. Apple gives you different accounts and privileges on the desktop but haven't carried this over to iPod/iPhone and now iPad. I believe for most people it hasn't been an issue since the iPhone and iPod touch are essentially a 'single-user' designed device.

The iPad is more like a family/shared device and should have some of the same parental restriction or permissions restrictions as the desktop allows. Hopefully that's something Apple is hearing from users like you to incorporate into the 4.0 OS.

I think there are some apps that I'd like to restrict my 4 year old from using (some of the videos or games with content for more mature viewers). Perhaps that can be had with the new 'folders' option in 4.0 that can be password protected. Although it doesn't address differing access within an application like AirVideo.
