Question about Airpods 2

I picked up a new pair of Airpods (I think). I know on the first model the LED was only visible inside the case, everything I'm seeing says the LED light is on the outside of the case except for the ones I just got still have it on the inside. Is the outside LED light only on the wireless variant?
