question about apple stores

I'm considering heading to my nearest Apple Store (~4 hours) to pick up a MacBook in July. I would like to know whether they can perform the modifications available on the online store. All I've got BTO is the 1 GB RAM upgrade (and no, I don't want to hear about how Apple RAM is overpriced) and iWork preinstalled. If I save up enough money, I might get the hard drive upgraded to 80GB as well. I just want to know if they can do it or if that's only through the online store.

Also, do physical Apple Stores honor the education discount?

While I can't answer your first questions (I'm fairly new to Macs and don't know too much about doing modifications in their stores), I do know that they honor education discounts. I bought my MacBook at the Apple store in Brea, CA on Tuesday and got the education price on the MB and on AppleCare. Just make sure that you take physical proof of your educational status -- a current student/faculty ID or proof of enrollment or something similar.

They'll upgrade the RAM and install any software you'd like but they can't upgrade the harddrive. That has to be custom ordered from the webstore.

Note: RAM is subject to availability, when I bought my iMac, they didn't have any they could sell me or install.

The HD upgrade may in fact be possible for the MacBook only since it is apparently very easy to remove (for once).

True it's simple, but Apple Retail stores don't keep internal hard drives in stock, unless it's for apple care replacements (but even then it's iffy).

I definitely didn't mean to imply it was true today, only that it may ultimately go that way.

Apple made a clear design decision here to make it less easy to replace the keyboard and more easy to replace the HDD. It would make sense for them to offer that level of CTO in the stores to increase the impulse buying of CTO MacBooks.
