Well i recently purchased Apple TV and i have a question. One of the main reasons why i purchased apple tv was to be able to play my playlist from my macbook through my home theater system in my house. I used to run a cord from my reciever to my mac but obviously that was kind of a pain running a cord across my living room. So my only question now is, does my macbook have to be on and opened in order to play my playlist on my tv? can i still surf the web and have my playlist playing on my tv?

You Mac needs to be running if you want to stream music and video from it to the Apple TV, otherwise it would not be visible to the Apple TV.
While you play media on your Apple TV located on your Mac, you can still use the Mac for other stuff.
It is just a network connection anyway.
Have you consulted the help yet?

Thank You that answers my question.
