Hello,

I apologize if this has been asked before, and I am sure it certainly has, but I couldn't find an answer in the search.

I just received what I am hoping is a Official Factory Unlocked Iphone 3GS. I am looking at the box and everything is fine but when I looked at the back of the box I see a small AT&T logo opposite the Apple logo.

Is this still an unlocked phone? I checked the serial number on apple's website and it says that it is not activated (obviously, the shrink wrap is still on) but that didn't really answer my question about being unlocked.

So I suppose what I am asking is Do all Iphone boxes come with the small AT&T logo on the back, even the unlocked ones?

Thanks for reading my unnecessarily long winded question.

The AT&T logo would indicate that it came from AT&T (ya rly), and as far as I'm aware all AT&T iPhones are locked. Do you mind if I ask where you got it from?

I actually received it as a gift. I am not sure where it came from. Edit: My girlfriend just called back and said it was from Ebay, so I am assuming I am screwed.

Is there some way to check using the serial number or other info on the back? Apple's website didn't seem too helpful besides saying it was never activated.

Just found this post on another site

Officially & Legally Unlocked by Apple means that the IMEI number has been registered as being "unlocked" in the Apple database, so you gain access to all of Apple's services just as any other original iPhone does.

Is there a way I can check my IMEI number?

Just another quick thought.

Can the phone even be locked by AT@T if there has never been a sim card inserted and it has never been activated?

I am thinking that if it is still sealed I should be able to go to any GSM service provider correct?

Thanks for your patience in dealing with my paranoia.

Unfortunately, the process of "locking" it to AT&T happens in production, it doesn't happen at the AT&T store

i don't know how you'd check using the serial number, but maybe you could get in contact with the eBay seller...or even just check the auction that your girlfriend won to see if it even says Unlocked...

yep

you will have too jb and unlock it to use it on anything but AT&T sorry op. there are no official unlocked iphones in the US. Also if you have a unlocked phone in the us there is no warrenty here, it would have to go back to the country of origin for repair! look at the hacking section here for more jb info and here is a link to the best tutorials. what ever you do if it doesn't have 3.1.3 firmware do not update your firmware!

1st you must JB

then you can unlock it!
