Question about battery calibration

So I'm calibrating my battery and I was a little confused by Apple's directions. Once the battery is dead can I just plug it in and start using it again? It was my understanding that I could plug in the battery after the battery dies and I've turned off the computer but how can I turn it off if the battery is dead?

you plug in the adaptor to recharge the battery until it's full again

I always did, Never really bothered the preformance at all. At least not that i could tell or anything.
