I think I understand what optimization does. But i don’t understand the hours it picks to finish charging. I normally go to bed around midnight and wake up around 7am. If i plug my iPP 13 in at bedtime it will tell me that the charging will be completed at 4am or so.

So why does it finish at 4am and not 6am or much closer to my waking time? If it completes at 4am it sits on the charger for 3 more hours. Thats not good, is it?

Anyway just trying to understand the process. Thanks.

It uses various analytics to determine your schedule so I can only speculate but it probably has to do with how fast or slow it charges since slower is better. Additionally, making sure it’s done charging enough in advance just in case your schedule changed, you wake up early, etc.

Purely speculation though and once it’s done charges today go into a trickle mode which is perfectly safe.

I know it’s not your question, but since the Battery Optimization is such a black box of how it works (and can’t be customized… inexplicably so), if you really want to optimize your battery for the best battery life, only charge while you’re awake and can pull it off charger once it’s gets to 80%.

(And also connect to charger before it drains to 20%.)

You can create an Automation to notify you when the battery reaches 80% to help.

It’s broken ? simply it’s broken because it’s not based on alarm but unknown algorithms known to no one…

Pretty much. There’s been suggestions to customize the optimized charging on the forums, and at least allow it to follow an alarm set.

Maybe one day.

It took Apple a while to implement the “silence unknown callers” feature that people were screaming for from the onslaught of spam calls, so maybe they’ll allow custom optimized charging times one day.

Even if the “Optimized Charging” delayed charging did work, which can’t be counted on happening, the battery is still being charged to 100% and held there for a few hours before you get up - completely negating any longer term benefit.

If it did work as it’s supposed to, shaving a few hours off of sitting at 100% SOC, that little delay each day won’t significantly increase the battery’s ultimate life span years down the road.

In my opinion - Optimize Battery Charge is a ruse.

Keep the battery charged between 20% and 80% for longevity. Also, run Low Power Mode where possible.
