Hi! I’ve never owned an AW but am considering one. I’ve been wondering how long can I use it before the battery becomes unusable? I asked ChatGPT and it told me Apple Watch batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of their original capacity after 500 full charge cycles, which could translate to around 2–3 years of typical use. Does this sound about right?

And is it possible to replace battery or do I have to buy new Apple Watch?

Thanks.

2-3 years is easily expected. Apple will not replace the battery in you watch but will trade you a like new watch in the same model for under $100. (Typo fixed)

Apple doesn't replace batteries, they replace the watch with a refurbished one. The battery has to be UNDER 80% using their diagnostic equipment to qualify.. If it says 80% they won't touch it.. I believe the cost is $99 U.S.

In the US the cost is $99.

strictly speaking they do replace batteries as part of the refurbishment process, but your point that you’ll get a different copy of your watch back is correct.

no worries though, when I had my S6 swapped for battery service the replacement was indistinguishable from a brand new watch.

It took nearly three years to reach 79% battery level, charging every night.
