Question about BlinkFeed on HTC One

A simplistic question I know, but am trying to decide between the One and the S4.

I have the smallest data plan AT&T offers. I am mostly in places with WI-FI but occasionally I am out and about for hours at a time.

With the inability to turn off BlinkFeed and constant streaming data, how much will that impact my usage?

You can't turn off blinkfeed, but you do not have to set it up.

It most likely uses very little data at all. The big data users are audio and video streaming. Loading basic text and data uses very little data at all. Android also seems to be a lot more data efficient than iOS.

You Also can install an alternative launcher like nova launcher which is based on the stock android launcher. When you change your default launcher the default sense launcher no longer is running so your not wasting any memory. Nova launcher likely uses less ram thsn the sense launcher.

The s4 I would expect to get much better support regarding updates although htc may improve since all three carriers got the same phone this time around.

As far as I'm aware, BlinkFeed will only refresh once you pulled down to "refresh" it otherwise it will not use up any data allowance at all...

This is correct, Blinkfeed only updates when you refresh it. I have moved it all the way over to my last home page and never use it so it doesn't update.

I know you can add Facebook and Twitter from the videos I've seen as well as some news sites they have pre-loaded and right now they don't allow you to add custom feeds, but what other personal social media sites can you add? Can you add Instagram, G+, LinkedIn? Or is it just FB and Twitter?

You can tell Blinkfeed to only update via wifi.

Just to into settings, and choose auto refresh.

You can choose WIFI Only or mobile data and WIFI

FB,Twitter & LinkedIn for now.

Calendar and TV app also integrate. HTC have opened up the api so in time third party apps will be able to push content to Blinkfeed too. So expect Fouresquare, g+, Instagram alongside your other regulat apps to display content.

I like it but it would be good to know how to move it to the last home page if I change my mind about it.

Simple. Go into your other home page and then hold screen to bing up home management / widgets and simply add a few pages and then make the furthest away your home page.

Thanks all for your great responses. After spending time playing with both phones yesterday, I purchased the S4. I can't give a specific reason, it just felt right to me.

After sleeping little last night from playing with it, I am loving it more today. Gorgeous phone and remarkably easy to set up and use, coming from years of iOS. I find it very intuitive and it even automatically connected to my AT&T MicroCell and has maintained the connection with NO drops, and consistent 5 bars. I had constant disconnects on my iPhone 4S which is why I decided to make this switch.

Enjoy your One. It is a fantastic phone as well. We are lucky to have great choices now!

Yep I've been saying this there really is only a hairs breadth between the handsets as they are both killer. There are compromises or arguments for & against both - but at the end of the day they are both fantastic phones.

What it will boil down is to personal subjective preference. How it feels in the hand, the colour, the weight, etc...

Just as we all don't buy the same clothes, the same car, the same food. Personal taste has to play a big part on what device we buy.

The iPhone 5 is fab, but just as much as the S4 & the One and I'm sure the iPhone 5S will be great too. So yeah choice is great, and really its very good for the consumer tha there isn't one that is better than the rest because it drives them to innovate and improve going forward.

We are reaching a point where hardware in our phones will probably plateau out, so software and refinements will be the way forward. Its interesting to see to companies approach the software side very differently one with emphasis on refinement and coherent user experience and the other with features, and niche apps. Again what is better is just down to the individuals tastes. At end of day its all good

I am keeping the One, returning the S4. Bloatware, space, rear speaker, memory etc is too hard for me to overlook.
