Hi all, Im new here, I was just wondering about the current macbook. Will it be replaced by this new ultraportable machine, or will that just fall into another category?

The story is that I now have enough money to buy the base model macbook but I would prefer 2gb of ram. I was wondering also whether when this new ultra thin one comes out, the current macbooks ram will be upgraded because I have seen a lot of machines now cheaper than macbooks with 2gb of ram. Also bigger hard drives.

Crucial.com is still the best.
UK people just have to go to... crucial.com/uk

I bought off crucial and had no problems in the UK. Just a word of advice - if you're going to buy a set of 2 x 1GB, it might be cheaper to buy to separate 1GB modules. I bought a pack of 2 x 2GB, and afterwards saw it was cheaper to buy to separate 2GB modules. :(

To get the best out of your RAM, you want to have matched pairs of RAM, so 2x512MB sticks, or 2x1GB and so on, what are you looking to get in total / monetary constraints?

Bought off Crucial a week ago... they ship to Wales, just visit the UK site. Paid £32 for 2 GB total (two 1gb sticks). Installed and happy as anything!

yeah I was going to buy a pair... how easy are they to install, ive never done anything to do with taking apart computers, ive seen the instructions and they seem simple enough.... theres a guide on here about it i think.

im going to buy 2x 1gb sticks...
so yeah that will cost about 32 quid...

question is, what shall I do with my 2 other 512mb memory sticks?

I just put them in the packaging for the other stick and kept em for safes.

Guide to installing RAM in the MacBook by Apple - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303721

BTW, when installing RAM, you will need to push the RAM modules quite hard until you feel them go in.

ok, cheers... will they click when pushed in?

Some do, some don't. Mine didn't. Eventually thought I'd break the thing, so I stopped pushing them in and simply turned on the machine. It worked. So don't push it too much, or else you'll hear more than a click.

You turn on the machine. It won't boot without ram. Once it boots , you click the apple, and select 'about this mac'. It should show they amount you inserted.

There are indeed lots of machines cheaper than a MacBook, but making those comparisons, make sure you take into account the software and hardware levels so that you're actually comparing Apples to apples.

As to RAM, you can upgrade to 2 gb of RAM for $52 from Crucial (1 gig DIMM x 2).

The MacBook won't be replaced, the "ultra-portable" will be an addition to the laptop lineup.
