Question about converting DVDs to MP4.

I'm thinking of converting my DVDs to MP4.

What do you guys do with the extra features on DVDs and the commentary tracks? I'm guessing creating a single MP4 file with chapter markers at the end for the extras, plus additional audio tracks for commentaries and languages?

And out of interest, what do you do with the DVD after? (There's something nice about having physical DVDs rather than it existing solely on a hard drive; I guess they're a waste of space and a hassle when you can get to them with a few clicks digitally.)

Put them into storage... I feel quite a bit better about ripping a DVD that I own. Sure it is still a grey-area issue, but I think I'd have a much better case if I could prove that I actually own the DVD I used to rip and it was only for quick/easy playback in my home.
 
I don't rip any special features or commentaries.

I put the DVDs in a box and when the box gets full I tape it up and move it to the attic with the boxes of CDs that have been ripped to ALAC and the boxes of laserdiscs that have NOT been ripped :)rolleyes:).

I wonder if there's an external Laserdisc data drive.... LOL
 
My tactic is similar to hualon's, the extra features and commentary tracks stay on the DVDs and the DVDs are boxed up.

Some are kept for display though...
 
Hi, Can someone tell me how to convert a DVD to MP4 so that I can watch on AppleTV, they guy at the genius bar mentioned that it could be automated, but didn't know if there was native software for doing this?
 
Handbrake for converting DVDs to MP4. Use the lastest Handbrake 0.9.3 with the lastest VLC player. Both free downloads.

You can also rip any extra bonus features you want as a seperate title using Handbrake. I did this for the bonus features on Wall-E, Burn-E and Presto.

I typically only rip the kids movies. Those are the DVDs that tend to get destroyed, and really, I don't have too many adult movies. Or, maybe I should say, grown-up movies. I just can't see watching too many movies over and over. It is the kids movies that get watched over and over. Well that and "adult" movies. I watch "adult" movies over and over. And over and over and over. The kids DVDs stay out for use in the portable DVD player until destroyed. Depending on the popularity of the title, a typical kids DVD makes it about 60 days.
 
Thank ZA, I want to convert for the exact same reason, little one destroys the discs quicker than I can burn them!!!
I actually didn't realize that I purchased Toast a while back and I believe that can do it too.... But thanks for the prompt reply it's much appreciated :)

hi. i just got my new itouch. and i really want to download movies on my unit. is this limited to original DVDs or can i use pirated one (blu-ray one)? hope you can help me. thanks:)
