I decided with my new MBP that I was going to encrypt my TM disk, it's a WD MyPassport 2 TB platter drive. After 24 hours it's only 35% complete. If I properly eject the disk can I remove it during the process or do I have to wait for the encryption to finish?

My understanding is that both CoreStorage and APFS encryption processes can be "paused" and resumed.
If the disk is properly ejected, it is safe to disconnect it. The encryption process will resume once you reconnect the drive. It is OK to "retry" the eject if the first time says it's busy, but don't do a "Force" eject.

Thanks, but it finished today while I was at work, 4 days after it started...
