If you use eSim in your iPhone does it make your normal SIM card useless?

Just I have just got an iPhone 11 and have my old iPhone 8+ which I’m going to use for work as I work on a construction site and I’m not going to be as bothered if I end up breaking the 8+ at work as I would if I took the 11.

Just wondering if I could set up eSIM on the 11 and have my normal SIM card in the 8+ like with the same number instead of having to keep swapping the SIM card from phones.

Missed that. Correct the eSIM and the nano Sim cannot share the same number. You can have 2 different numbers in the same phone.
