Hey everyone. Just wanted to ask a question about factory unlocked iPhones i saw on eBay. If they are unlocked are there any advantages to getting one when it comes to the jailbreaking or are u still screwed if it is running 3.1. Can u downgrade firmware at any time or is it all the same and just unlocked. Also, I'm looking to get one if ur not locked into 3.1. Suggestions on where to buy besides eBay. Thanks for ur help.

Well you need to jailbreak to unlock a regular iPhone. With a factory unlocked one you don't need to go that extra step to unlock but you still need to worry and wait like everyone else for a jailbreak.

So, short answer, yeah you're still stuck on regular ol' 3.1 with a factory unlocked phone. You can change carriers at will but you can't do stuff like install Cydia.

One other thing. The phone's on eBay were bought previously, obviously. They may have been purchased before 3.1 was out so they might be on 3.0.1 or even 3.0. You could ask the seller what version is installed before you buy.

If it's truely a factory unlocked phone, it doesn't matter what firmware version it is on it will still accept any GSM sim and work.

That said, if you want to jailbreak it, the JB tools for a 3GS already on official 3.1 firmware are not released yet, but should be soon (we hope).

If you are really interested in buying it, send the seller a question asking what the firmware version is.

3.0 or 3.0.1 you can JB it immediately
3.1 you can probably JB it soon
