So my dad bought a pair of "refurbished" airpods 2 of wish for 25$ + 10$ shipping to sweden (mainly for fun, to see what he gets). The box they came in look genuine, the airpods look genuine and the case seems to be genuine. Still, abit sceptic.

The shocker was when he opened the case and the "airpod connect animation" came up on his phone, i thought this mechanism didnt work for fake airpods? They pause/play music when you pull one out/in etc. Siri works on double tap etc.

So the question: Because the phone identifies them as airpods (with the animation) on case opening - does that mean they are actually a refurbished pair? Or is it just a really well-made china copy?

I don't have a pair of airpods myself so i have no reference to compare with.

Update: Checked the case serial number and airpods pop up on apple.com, however, this serial could be stolen from a genuine pair ofc..

Update2: The case has few scratches that can be seen with good lighting, supporting the claim that these are refurbished.

normal, I got a pair from aliexpress before and they were a true replica with the exact look and functionality of the original Airpods except the mic wasn't as good as the originals.

Generally, AirPods clones have been an exact replica of the original ones, the only difference being battery life and maybe slight audio quality. And yes, they also replicated the W1/H1 and W2 chips so the iPhone could think they're genuine pairs, hence the animations.

Regarding the serial number, as you guessed, it could be just taken from somewhere else. I don't really think anyone would spend and waste their time refurbishing these small gadgets, so to me it sounds like your dad got clones, especially considering they're from Wish.
