I was looking at when Time mMachine backups have been done on my Mac, as I had some problems with it a week or so. I just looked at the folders on the external backup disk, I assume that's ok to do.

I included a screen shot of the folders below - what surprised me is there were not folders for roughly each hour, as the settings say to run every hour (at it seems to, anecdotally). I know it's not just a brute-force backup up everything that's changed, it uses links etc. - is the set of folder times I have here just a by-product of how it's doing the hourly backups or is something else going on? Are some backups not completing, and how would I know (console has no crashes, and I see no 'logd' log file in console/log reports)? I am curious how this works. Thanks!

I'm sure a search engine will bring many results to your questions. In case you are unfamiliar with web search engines like Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo, I've picked a link which will answer your questions if you choose to read it.
