question about ibooks app and flying

Don't you have to have your phone turned to airplane mode while on an airplane?

I am going to Japan soon and was testing my book apps for possible problems. When I tried the ibooks app it said that while I had the airplane mode on it said that I had to "turn off Airplane Mode or Use Wi-Fi to access data". So this means that I can not use this while on the plane. So if I were to get an ipad I wouldn't be able to use that on the plane either? Geez.

While the kindle for iphone app works. Which is great to know but I always thought that the kindle app uses wifi to access the books while I was reading. Exactly how does that kindle app work?
I know that is a stupid question but one that I could use an answer to.

That isn't the case with me. iBooks definitely requires a data connection for syncing books but after that the app will function without any data requests in Airplane mode.

ok thank you. I guess I will go down to apple this week and find out what is wrong. But I tried it two times and said the same thing. I

The iBooks app will try to connect to the network every time you start it up so an error message about the network is not unexpected but you should be able to ignore the message and carry on to read the book.

The reason it tries to access data is because iBooks can now synchronize your place in the book you're reading between different devices, e.g. if you've read a few chapters on an iPad and then open the book the next day on your iPhone it will try to contact some apple service where all this stuff is stored and a few seconds after you open the book on the iPhone it will magically jump forward to the page where you left off on the iPad. The consequences of you not enabling network acess should just be that the page will remain where it was when you last read it on that particular device so no big deal if you only ever read on the one device or if you are happy to page forward yourself to get to the right place in your book.
